Adventures in Mold Removal

Late last year we bought a house in Cumming, GA. It was in the same neighborhood in which we were living already which means the kids didn’t have to switch schools. And we love the area that we get to call home. Believe it or not, it was the 3rd house we owned at that time. Long story, that hopefully ends with us only owning one house by the end of February. You can keep that in your prayers. It is another blog post, I am sure. Anyway, on with the story of the house we bought. It was a foreclosure.

We did not know this but the house had sat empty for almost 3 years with the neighbors taking care of the yard and making sure it looked good on the outside. When we walked through the house for the first time we thought it needed some work. But a little elbow grease and love and we would be in an incredible house. We made an offer and ended up getting the house. Woo hoo!

We knew one of the major issues with the house was mold in the basement. We didn’t know how much but we knew there was some. We did what most people do and tried to clean it up with some bleach and water. Come to find out though that this method doesn’t really do much in terms of getting rid of mold. In fact, it makes the problem worse. We had to do something different if we wanted to solve this problem.

I didn’t want my family living in the house that had a mold issue, so I interviewed several companies that came before we moved in. Many of them had the same solution. Let’s take down the drywall in places, use chemicals here and there, and then scrub everything down. One company even wanted to tear out a good section of the floor joist and replace it. Prices ranged from $2000-$7500 depending on the company. There was something in me that wanted a different solution. If you know me much at all, you know that I like to research what is the latest technology in solving problems. This problem was no different. I knew there had to be a solution out there that didn’t use harsh chemicals, guys in head to toe white suits with gas masks, and 5-10 days of work.

That is when Sam Johnson and Donna Siebert walked in my house. Sam and Donna own a company called MoldGone4Good. We went down to the basement and they assessed the problem. Then they described a method of mold removal that sounded much better. No chemicals, no white suits, and in 24 hours of time. Sam and Donna wanted to use science to kill the mold and then vacuum out the dust left behind. The kicker to it all was that it was cheaper as well.

I wanted to know the science. So I asked a lot of questions. When it comes down to it they are changing oxygen (O2) to ozone (O3) with their own, patent pending, machines. You see, mold needs oxygen to live, but so do bugs and other unwanted things in your home. Their process takes the oxygen out of your home killing all mold without chemicals. Not only does it get mold out of wood, drywall, and other building material but also anything else like toys, furniture, and carpet.

Needless to say, I was impressed by what was presented but what would actually happen? We scheduled the day their machines were going to run. Donna came in and taped off the basement, set up the machines, and explained what was going to happen again. Humans can not be in the house for 24 hours while the machines are running because, well, we need oxygen to live as well.

The next day I showed up to the house and met Sam and Donna. They had taken off the tape that sealed the basement and we walked in. I was amazed by what I saw. The mold was gone. How did I know? Not only were there no physical signs of mold, but the smell was gone as well. The carpets were clean and the bugs were dead. I even put some deck chairs that had mold on them in the basement to just see what would happen. The mold was gone from them as well. I truly was impressed by the technology. I was also impressed by the customer service that I received by both Sam and Donna.

After they left our job was to vacuum the carpets and dust. For the last 4 months we have had no mold in our basement. Technology and science won.

Why do I tell you all of this? I ran into Sam a few days ago and he asked how we were doing. I told him everything was great. I asked him how his company was doing. They have been in business for 8 years and I wanted to hear that they were growing. He said that the patents were coming along and that, in fact, they were growing. He even said that they now have franchise opportunities. Here is what hit me the most though, I asked, “What do you think is going to take you guys to the next level?” His answer was great, “I get the most satisfaction out of knowing that we are helping people. I want to help get homes healthier and find others who want to do the same thing.”

Two things that you can do from here:

  1. If you need mold removed from your home the please go to http://MoldGone4Good.com and tell Sam and Donna I said “hi.” I highly recommend them and their company.
  2. If you are are looking to start a business, look at this company and the growth potential that it has. I mean it. There is a lot of upside to this and I really like where this company is headed.
