Let’s get Awkward!

When was the last time you looked at your wife, husband, best friend, or anyone for that matter and said, “Let’s get awkward?” Most people don’t like to feel awkward. In fact most people avoid awkward situations, people, and places as much as possible. For instance, I asked, “What makes you feel awkward?” and these were some of my favorite responses (you can leave yours in the comments):
“When people say, Let’s talk about our feelings.”
“The Dance Floor.”
“Unfunny Comedians”
and my personal favorite “”My super handsome/studly looks make me awkward. I’ve spent my whole life trying to figure out how to deal with it.” – Justin Tapp
Are you like most people?
This past weekend I was challenged to do something with my wife on a regular basis that makes every couple I know awkward. Simply go to your spouse and say the words, “Let’s pray together.” What you just did was say, “Let’s get awkward!!”
I’ve been married 11 years and to this day it is still uncomfortable to sit down and pray together with my wife. I’m an ordained pastor. I pray with people all the time. I pray in front of people all the time. This should not be that hard but it is. Why?
Why is it so hard to pray with your spouse? The issue is that you are humbling yourself before God and we don’t humble ourselves in front of our spouses very well. Even though this may be one of the most awkward things in the world I believe that it is one of the most important if my marriage or your marriage is going to last.
So tonight go home to your spouse and say the words, “Let’s get Awkward!” Then really surprise him/her by saying “I think we should pray together.” Let me know how that goes.
